Changing Your Address in Ontario: A Guide for Newcomers

When you move to a new home in Ontario, it’s important to update your address with government offices, financial institutions, and service providers. This ensures you continue to receive important mail, keep your documents valid, and avoid possible fines or delays.

Below are the most common places where newcomers should update their address after moving:

1. ServiceOntario (Health Card and Driver’s Licence)

In Ontario, you must update your address on your health card and driver’s licence within 6 days of moving.

  • You can update your address online at Change my address | Ontario.ca or by visiting a ServiceOntario location.
  • You will receive new documents in the mail with your updated address.

2. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)

If you are a newcomer with a work permit, study permit, permanent residence application, or citizenship application, you must update your address with IRCC.

  • You can update it online through the IRCC Change of Address tool.
  • This ensures you do not miss important letters about your application or status.

3. Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)

The CRA needs your current address to send you tax information, benefits, and credits (such as the Canada Child Benefit).

  • You can update your address through your CRA My Account, by phone, or by mail.

4. Your Bank

Make sure your bank has your new address so that your statements, credit card bills, or other important documents are sent to the right place.

  • Many banks allow you to update your address online through their website or app.
  • You can also visit a branch in person.

5. Car Insurance

Your car insurance company must have your correct address, as your location can affect your insurance rate and coverage.

  • Call your insurance provider or update your address through their website or mobile app if available.

6. Phone and Internet Providers

Your phone and internet company should know your new address, especially if you are moving your service to a new home.

  • Many providers allow you to update your address in your mobile app or online account.
  • You can also call customer service for help.

Other Places to Consider

Depending on your situation, you may also need to update your address with:

  • Your employer (for payroll and tax slips)
  • Your children’s school
  • Utility companies (electricity, gas, water)
  • Doctors, dentists, or other healthcare providers
  • Subscriptions or delivery services (magazines, meal kits, online shopping accounts)

Final Tip

It’s a good idea to make a checklist of all the organizations and services you use before moving. Update your address as soon as possible to make your transition smooth and avoid missed mail or problems.
