Become a Mentor to a Newcomer
2025.10.15
Moving to a new country is exciting, but it can also be overwhelming. Imagine starting fresh in a new place where you don’t know anyone, the systems feel unfamiliar, and even small daily tasks can feel like big challenges. That’s where you can make a difference.
Through the Canada Connect Program, run locally by Settlement Services at Community Employment Services (CES), community members have the opportunity to become mentors to newcomers who are building their lives in Oxford County.
What Is the Canada Connect Program?
Canada Connect is a national initiative by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that helps newcomers feel more at home in their communities. Locally, CES matches Canadian citizens and well-established residents with newcomers who are seeking friendship, guidance, and local knowledge.
As a mentor, you might:
- Meet your newcomer match for coffee or walks around town
- Share information about local activities, services, and resources
- Help them practice English in a friendly, informal way
- Celebrate milestones, like their first Canadian winter, new job, or community event
It’s not a formal program with heavy requirements. It’s about connection, kindness, and community.
Why Become a Mentor?
Volunteering as a mentor is meaningful. You’ll:
• Build a friendship that crosses cultures and experiences
• Learn about another country’s traditions and perspectives
• Strengthen the community by helping newcomers feel welcomed and supported
Many mentors say they end up learning just as much from their newcomer match as they share. These simple connections often grow into lasting friendships.
How to Get Involved
Becoming a mentor is easy. The CES Settlement Services team will guide you through the process, help you understand your role, and match you with a newcomer whose interests and needs align with yours.
